derekdeal on Feb 22, 2010Is anyone else out there a vinyl record collector? I got bit by the bug bad a few months ago so my collection is small, but im finding that its starting to become pretty consuming. I love it though, all of a sudden Im really enjoying purchasing and owning music again.
How big is your collection? What's your latest acquisition? Who do you like to buy from? What have you bought that looks flat out amazing in person?

My collection is small with 12 12"s (multiple double LPs) and 4 6"s. I i'll post a list of all of them later it's floating around my computer somewhere. My most recent purchases are La Dispute's Somewhere At The Bottom Of The River Between Vega And Altair and Wolves in the Throne Room's Black Cascade.

La Dispute's came with a gnarly completely transparent record.

Spence on Feb 22, 2010Check out hottopic for records. They've had a 50% off all clearance for a while now. Not sure if its just for the local hottopic but I scored Grizzly Bear's Veckatimist and the Wolves in the Throne Room album (both double LPs) for about $5 bucks a piece along with some random EPs for a dollar.

mikelopez on Feb 22, 2010I have a few hundred at the moment. I've been collecting since I was thirteen. Used to work at a record store too. I'm trying to size down my collection at the moment. Make it bare bones. I got a new turntable with a usb port, and I've been turning tracks into mp3s. It's awesome.
If anyone wants to do trades, take a look at my list. Open to cash offers as well for most things. I'm picky though. Don't hold it against me if I turn down trades:

I usually buy direct from the bands or labels, and if not I check out some used record stores. Lou's in Encinitas, Off the Record, M-Theory in North Park. Serious. I got the first Brand New album for $5 when it came out. Now it's 'worth' 250-300. Mars Volta first LP is $100, got it for $15.
Btw, you should get some boxes for your seven inches. I got mine from bags unlimited. They look like comic book boxes. Good investment.Skull With Hair said: records are rad because while all other forms of physical media are pretty much worthless after a couple years the value of records continues to climb. i have been buying only records since i was in my late teens and in retrospect i am really glad i did.

as for the boxes, those are great but i want a way to put them out. i can put them in my normal record shelves i just need some sort of backer so they don't all slip out the back. i'll get around to it eventually.mikelopez said:

I can keep both. I like keeping tabs on Mike Kennerty from All American Rejects. His collection is rad. Lots of Descendents, NOFX and Husker Du. I used to collect comics religiously. It's hard to get out of the collector phase. It's like not reading the chrome cover variant if you read the standard edition. (Geekiest analogy ever.)
I try and play them only a few times (preferably to record them to mp3), that way I can insure they have a longer life. There are definitely some records I want to pass down in case I have kids or something.

i don't know who told you that listening to your records damages them, but it really doesn't. i'm not some audiophile freak, but i definitely prefer the sound of an actual record to an mp3 any day.mikelopez said:

It happens to everything: vinyl, tapes, and cds.
I learned that from personal experience, and the years I worked in a record store. We had to evaluate how much to pay people when they traded in vinyl. If it showed a lot of use, we had to pay them a lot less, even if it was a really rare album. For the store, our manager asked to keep audiophiles in mind since they were the bulk of our customers.
Records sound a lot lusher, but it's about the music. Not just the format, cool as it is.
