Band Job Refresh?
Started on 01/18/12-
Craig Pearce on Jan 18, 2012I've noticed there has been a lot of people mentioning about how quiet Band Job has got lately. I love this site, there is so much awesome work on here and talented artists. So...
Just wondered what people thought of a fresh look for the site. I know this would be time consuming but hopefully would be worth it in the long run. This may inspire people to post more and show new things are happening, maybe a few new features too...
Anyway just a thought but be good to get some other opinions.
Cheers :) -

Agreed. I have suggested this on numerous occasions. I love bandjob, I check the site faithfully every day. Sucks that nothing has changed in a long while. It's been so stale I think I see some mold starting to grow on the header menu up there. Needs a darker vibe, and some fresh users. -
Kevin on Jan 18, 2012I agree as well. We're trying to carve out some time to give BandJob some love and attention. In the meantime, feel free to post ideas.

Craig Robson on Jan 18, 2012the front page turn around is sLOOWWWW is there a way we can turn over the featured projects quicker?
that wolf man has been there since last year, whilst im not complaining (any free exposure is awesome) it would seem busier if that changed more often.
furthermore i think there needs to be more policing in all areas of the site, the projects section is in danger of filling up with "personal projects" and other trash that detracts from the professionalism of the website.
thirdly i think some sort of rules should be applied to the jobs section, that or a little animated gif of an illustrator snapping their pencil in half. there has been one job since bandjobs inception (that i can think of) that would be worth checking out.
personally this felt like a designers "safe place" on the web when it opened, people talked logically and professionally and it went down from there. -

All really great points. We've talked about giving a few of you guys moderator privileges to help out with all of that. Some changes in the system definitely need to happen as well.

i agree with these points, especially in the featured projects and jobs section, some of those posts have been there for months

I agree with all of your points and I respect your work Craig but this confuses me.

You wrote that on the forum three days ago and then you posted a personal project a couple of days later. I'm not saying that project was trash or unprofessional. But to be honest, Band Job is not the right place to post that project in my opinion.

its an actual product though, made to my specifications and sold under my "brand"
i was talking about stuff that does not have a "client" behind it. in this case i would class myself as the client and deem the submission acceptable as it has a tangible end product. -
Craig Robson on Jan 22, 2012p.s. please explain WHY you dont think its appropriate for me to have posted that project here, im not above taking it down if i agree.

Kevin on Jan 22, 2012I don't think it's any different than posting work you did for a clothing brand, which has been ok'd. Just because it's your brand shouldn't make a difference.

Sure. If I had control over the projects section, it would only consist of work made for bands the site being Bandjob.com. However, like Kevin wrote above it looks like it's been ok'd. And if the majority of the community thinks that way, I guess I'm just gonna have to live with it and focus on the band designs. -

there was a point where this was exclusively BAND-jobs (as you're right in thinking the name suggests) recently the moderators and creators relaxed the rules to include work of brands and companies. -
Geoff May on Jan 23, 2012I agree with a lot that has been said already. I think this site has a ton of potential to be much more than it currently is. I haven't posted a design here in about 7 months, mainly because I feel like the site is pretty much dead, so what's the point. It sucks to say that.
Like science experiments and blind dates, Band Job started with the best of intentions. Unfortunately for this site, it seems like the Black Axe guys have a lot of other stuff on their plate, so this site gets put on the back burner. I can totally understand that. I go months sometimes without updating my own site because paying jobs take precedence over my personal stuff. So I definitely can see where they're coming from.
I think the main thing that needs moderated is the jobs section. A concrete rate (not "negotiable" or "based on work involved") should be a must in order to post a job up. Right now it's just jerkoff upstarts and local bands who want amazing art for $50-100. Also need to make sure it's posted clearly that the job page is for companies/people looking for designers and not vice versa. Violate that and you get a one month ban from posting your work on the site. Violate it twice and it's a permanent ban. You lose.
That said, Kevin and the other Black Axe guys, if you need help with the site, just ask. I'd be willing to help moderate or whatever. If you get enough outside help it'll probably ease the burden of you having to handle it all yourself. It might also help to get some new blood in here and bring this site back to life. Like I said, this site has a ton of potential. -

Thanks man. I'd love to get a few moderators to help out for sure.
As for the jobs section, I do think a budget should be mandatory. I think the whole "tbd" thing wastes a lot of people's time. On another note, I don't want to get in the game of policing what budgets should be allowed for what projects. If someone wants to post a t-shirt design job for $100, I'm ok with that. I wouldn't want to take the job, and I'm sure most of us wouldn't either, but maybe there's a kid out there that would be stoked on it. That shouldn't be our call. But, if posting that budget was mandatory then you or anyone else wouldn't have to waste your time looking into it. Maybe we can even set up a filter so you don't even have to see jobs under a certain amount. -
Geoff May on Jan 24, 2012Yeah, it's not the prices that bug me (though they are retardedly low) as much as the people how say "TBD" or "Negotiable". You just KNOW that means $50-100 budget, maybe even less. Why not just man up and say what the budget is instead of doing the old foot-in-the-door technique.
