Using online photos

Worthey IFC on Dec 13, 2011I dont get paid a lot for my designs, I kind of take what I can get, so sometimes I dont use my own photos, but always try to track down whoever took the photo and work something out to where they approve the usage. Im trying to track down someone for a newspaper photo and keep getting sent in circles trying to find the owner.
What Im wondering is, is there any sort of situation where you dont need to get the rights to a photo if they photo as been altered to a certain extent? I know its kind of far fetched, but I thought I'd try anyway. -

the ONLY times you should use a photograph is if you A: get consent from the owner
or 2: the image is royalty free or public domain.
there is an argument for a collage approach, however im not sure where i stand on it. -
iamdb on Dec 13, 2011Do what you think is best, tons of stuff is stolen in the artworks as means of "artistic license" ask around sure you'll see a bit. I don't support it... But to each his own. For major record label or for your uncle'ss brother's band who plays the local titty bar every Wednesday night? Better if you find another image or take your own. Buy a cheap camera and you'll never need stock or a photographer. Best investment you'll ever make as a designer.
