Show me your lettering

Drawing letters is one of my favorite things to do. Below I've posted some things I've done. All of them are hand drawn from scratch. I posted this thread because I feel like I don't see a whole lot custom lettering anymore. So please feel free to post what you have done.

    Comments and critiques welcome!

Not my cup of tea, but this was really fun to do. Here's my first attempt at something like this. It follows the shape of a pentagram, if it's not obvious lol.

Absolutely love your logo work Sam! Soo rad and the textures just make it even better.
  • zeblove on Mar 25, 2010

Uzi, you did a good job making the letters appear to be a pentagram. One suggestion would be to make the 'R' and the 'E' either shorter, or slant in towards the 'T', to form more of a stars shape. Awesome though!

Sam, awesome stuff! Were those approved?

I think the l in glass is a little hard to read. I might disconnect it from the g and slide the vertical part up in from of the l in 'like'. I would also put the horizontal part of the l under the a so you can move those letters closer together.

Also, the a in glass and e in like; I think it would look better if the were cut off straight rather than with a notch cut out

I think it's really good, just a few little picky things.

this is still early in the sketch phase, but it's actually a job doing a logo for a comic book. no idea how it'll end up, hopefully tasteful

um... that 'destiny' is spectacular man. I love the balance and dimensionality. 'Gauntlets' is really great as well. IMHO they seem to not match up together though... then again I'm not seeing them in their final format. I would almost like to see a more subtle type for gauntlets to let the 'destiny' shine.

no way, i'm the first one to know it's far from perfect. i really appreciate all the insight and can use all the criticisms i can get, especially as it relates to type and design. one of the reasons i'm so stoked to be a part of Bandjob is that it is more about curating, critiquing, and creating good work, as opposed to sites out there that are either anonymous trash talk or, arguably worse, 100% back-patting (despite how i can't seem to surf through the work here and say anything smarter or constructive than "sweet sassy molassy! that shit rules!"

this is one of those things where the client was pretty specific with what he wanted, and sometimes you're doing everything you can to make any context or element work as good as it can, even when, or especially if, sensibilities and requests are clashing. i don't mean passing a buck to art direction, but believe it or not, this is a "restrained" version, it was almost a Rebus

point being i really appreciate and value any insight from people here (especially Zeb and Jason!). i promise it doesn't fall on deaf ears

nice lettering, I dig the middle version the most.
just a quick on top of my head opinion.. I don't really get the I in the beginning,

Yah the I in the beginning is more insinuated than actually being an I per say. Arsis has one of my favorite logos of all time, and its kind of the same deal, vague and an insinuation more than 100% literal. With the rediculous popularity of "death metal" type logos as of late, I found that the fans almost look for the shape now, versus the actual letters. As long as they are in their somewhere, it seems to be fair game. haha
